Children with parents who smoke are more likely to try cigarettes and become smokers themselves, studies suggest. As a parent, it’s your duty to create and maintain a good foundation of communication with your kids early on to make it easier to work through tricky issues like tobacco use.

US Epidemic

E-cigs come in many forms. They can resemble traditional tobacco cigarettes, cigars, pipes and even normal everyday items including pens. Juuls, however, are more discreet, resembling a common USB drive.

What are vapes?

Vapes (or sometimes referred to as electronic cigarettes) are battery powered devices that deliver nicotine and other harmful ingredients to the smoker. JUUL is the top selling e-cigarette in the US and most used by youth. JUUL pods contain as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes.

Why are vapes so harmful?

They do not deliver water vapor, even though many youth believe that. Vapes and electronic cigarettes contain many harmful chemicals and ingredients. E-cigarettes have been the most used tobacco product among youth in the US since 2014. A risk for youth in electronic cigarettes is that they contain nicotine and they can be highly addictive. Nicotine can harm brain development, impact learning, and increase risk for other addictions.

How can you help?

Always engage with youth and try to keep an open flow of communication. Make sure they understand the dangers of smoking and how vapes can harm them. Look into free resources and classes and encourage them to quit and join a free class.
