Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Quitting smoking is an important decision to make a significant improvement in one’s health. The health benefits of quitting tobacco products positively affect all the major body systems. Medical professionals know the dangers of smoking, particularly the complications before and after surgery. Quitting reduces the risk of respiratory problems, delayed wound healing, infection, and reduced bone fusion dramatically. Nicotine Replacement Therapy, NRT, is a powerful tool in assisting tobacco cessation efforts. In the U.S. there are currently 5 methods of NRT, gum, lozenge, patch, inhaler and nasal spray. In addition, pharmacologic methods include use of bupropion (Zyban) and varenicline (Chantix). NRT being the most researched method of cessation is sometimes replaced with the use of pharmacologic methods as nicotine may increase wound and cardiovascular complications.
